Who we are

The Joshua Tree National Park Inholders Association is an informal organization of people who own property within the national park.

These private properties were purchased or homesteaded prior to when President Franklin D. Roosevelt used the Antiquities Act to establish Joshua Tree National Monument in 1936, which later became Joshua Tree National Park in 1994. Some of these properties have been passed down to later generations of the original owners while others were purchased later.

There is an excellent article by Tess Eyrich about the desert inholdings in the Spring 2023 University of California Riverside Magazine titled "The American Dream at the Edge of the Earth".
